Vandal Automation

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I have a problem with automation in Vandal and, hopefully, someone can enlighten me how to do it... I know how to automate all the little knobs in Vandal using both external midi cntrl and automation drawing tool. But how do you automate scene selection changes? preset changes? Can't figure it out... I suspect it's quite obvious and I'm missing it totally OR it's impossible and no wonder I haven't found it yet...

I've been beating my head against my computer trying to get Vandal automated, but I have your answer.

Midi CC23 & 24 will cause the "scenes" to scroll up and down, but they will also crash Samplitude.

Strange thing is I can't find a way to save scenes. I have to start with a preset that already has scenes and alter them.

Please keep us updated on your progress.

Scenes are controlled via program change. That is far from perfect at the moment, and it will change with future versions.

Currently, when Vandal receives a program change event, it compares that to the last one. If it's greater, it advanced one scene (or preset). If it's smaller, it goes back one scene (preset).

What to do upon program change can be defined it the 'global' tab view.

This often far from perfect, I know. That's why it will change.

One of the next versions will introduce a 'patch list' scheme, where the user can map actual presets to any midi/vst program. So that the presets are already out of the way of scene controls. Controlling either thing will be more flexible, selectable out of a list of dedicated events, program, cc or note, I think.

Which Vandal version are you refering to?

Scenes can't be saved seperately. A scene is an 'alternative setting' of the current preset. But when you click 'copy', the current one is held in memory until you unload the instance. So it also survives loading in a new preset. This way, you can create presets more easily, for instance by pasting memory scenes to a new/temporary preset that you change later on.

Thank you for your responses! After reading all the info you've provided, I've tried to automate scene/patch selection via midi cc 23/24 but I've failed... Here's what I did so please tell me what did I do wrong: Vandal's on the track [global settings set to scene change] => set midi out to VSTx Vandal [channel all]=> go to track automation => choose midi cntr automation => choose 23 or 24 => draw the value up so the scene 1 should jump to scene 2 => nothing happens upon the playback [only a wee control on Vandal interface blinks when it receives midi message]... So... any step by step tutorial would be greatly appreciated, guys <_< Thank you!

Hi Sascha and codedinblack,

I'm using Sam v8.3 SE and the demo download of vandal (v.1.101) with an RME hdsp9624 sound card and a Behringer FCB1010 as midi controller..

I programmed the FCB1010 to send midi CC 23 & 24 because they are "preset up and down" messages. I now see that those midi messages had no effect. It was the Program Change messages that Vandal was seeing. I did not edit the Track Automation dialog.

Anyway, sometimes I can see the scene scroll before Samplitude crashes, but it always crashes.

My goal is to automate Vandal so I can use it live so I'm not interested in drawing automation curves or activating the transport to play or record. I just want to use it as a midi controllable guitar amp.

Thanks for the info on "scenes" Sascha. That helps.

Vandal sounds great and I am anxious for automation.
