  1. hey sirius, im always in object mode. but alt doesnt change the behavior at all. dragging on a crossfade just moves the object. alt only allows me to move the object if its locked. otherwise it doesnt seem to do anything. ive been playing with the settings, and the only time im seeing a highlighted crossfade is if i have asymmetric crossfades enabled. maybe this is why i can have to independently adjust each side? but without it, there seems to be no crossfading, regardless of auto crossfade setting. thanks
  2. ok this should be really simple to find out but i cant! i have a short section of chopped audio spanning several tracks. its immediately surrounded by empty space and then other objects. so where is the command to manually crossfade the whole section? seems the only way is to have auto crossfade on and then close the gaps. but i have to make sure to unselect the outside objects or they are expanding out into the other objects. in cubase you could select a section and give a crossfade command. it would typically ignore the larger sections of empty space and just crossfade the selected objects with eachother provided they were close together (like < .5 sec or something). thats how im used to working. also, is there a way to slide crossfades around as a whole without resizing each end independently? i'd like the crossfade to act like an object in this respect when i click on it. i have to do this a lot since the quantizer is so inefficient and its an extra pain when each crossfade edit is several mouseclicks, zooms etc instead of one. thanks!
  3. yea, as i thought, gluing just bounces objects into one (midi or audio). i need to keep them separate. linking doesnt seem to be the ticket either. also, i cant seem to directly select crossfades. im just selecting the object. so holding alt only moves the edge of the one object and not the entire crossfade. i need a quicker way of doing this since the audio quantizer is so inefficient and often crossfading drums on the hit instead of right before, where it is more ideal. otherwise im getting the weird sounds of two hits right next to eachother. so i need to be able to move the entire crossfade accross several tracks over with one motion. otherwise i have to keep zooming in and out for the shorter xfades and move both edges, which is a total pain. seems quicker to just manually edit the obvious mistakes rather than mess with the quantizer at all.
  4. thanks tekker! the gluing tip sounds promising. ill play with that. but when gluing audio, isnt that the same as bouncing it? thats how ive been using it. and i dont really understand the strategic differences between linking and gluing. if i can just keep all the same parts with the same name glued then i can unglue them to modify one and just change its name so i dont accidentally reglue it to the others. that should work decently... if i glue something, i can unglue it right? guess i should just try this first.... thanks again.
  5. absolutely! its one of its uniquely awesome features...searched so long to find one that does that. when you start mapping your hardware controller all of your basic track functions are available mostly under the "track" and "mixer" headings you will see under "program functions." to get the various aspects of your eq for instance, you just need to change the slot number, twiddle the new knob or fader, etc and hit assign. make sure you tick endless controller if it is one. i think some of the functions will only work with an endless knob as well. takes some experimentation, but in the end saves so much time to have things mapped the way it makes sense to you! good luck!
  6. thanks for your help so far. workflow is coming along. i still cant quite manage a way to affect changes within an object globally for all instances or copies of that object. im talking about midi data now. if i have a pattern that i want to use throughout a project, is there a way for each copy of it to reflect changes, such as a note change in the pattern, in every instance of the same name? also, is there a quick way to slide over crossfades as a whole without having independently adjust each end of them? thanks again!
  7. yea i could use some other resources as well. the videos are helpful but i figured out most of the basics on my own. its just the peculiarities which show up during intensive work which cause problems...and cause me to bitch in the forum about them. i think the community around samplitude is not really as robust as those around the more common daws unfortunately. but at least here the developers actually concern themselves with our needs...

  9. sweet. auto crossfade was the ticket! thanks!! well this is a long shot but do you know of any way to make the mousewheel zooming more smooth? it works in determined increments, which is too fast and imprecise. especially since my mousewheel is not the 'clicking' kind. then im pretty much good to go.... no wait theres one more thing. when i perform 'remove audio gaps' from the quantizer on a short section that was formerly of a longer section, it adds some long 'wings' of unwanted audio, instead of keeping it the length i chopped it to. how can i avoid this? thanks for your help
  10. ok despite my bitching, i managed to find a better workflow.... without that nasty scroll lock behavior. anyways, ill just quickly share what ive found. i switched the button that was formerly known as scroll lock to something about updating section to the play cursor position. so i can just tap that to get where it is and freely scroll around with the mouse wheel. i have shift + wheel set to zoom and ctrl + wheel switching active track. then ive got the cut mouse mode set to c, and object mouse to v, and b to delete, and g to range so i can quickly edit without looking at the keyboard or moving my hands. its quite nice. but i still have gripes about the object split and resizing behaviour. and so wish there was a 'locate in empty space' option for the play cursor. now actually the single only thing i miss from cubase...
  11. who's retarded, me or whoever schemed this business? i'm listening to recorded drum tracks, trying to cut and delete the crap and saving some of the better sections to loop. i assigned scroll lock to the 'f' key to make this simpler on myself. (i can hit it to stop scrolling and make a cut and then hit again to catch up to the cursor.) ok my first wtf award goes to the object property which makes it impossible to drag the right end of an object after splitting it. in fact even though i can drag the left end of the new right side object, pulling it to the right doesnt even separate the objects, as i would reasonably expect. to do that i have to drag that over and then, and only then, the right side of the left object can i move, thereby separating the two split objects. is this some purposeful nonsense designed to make a simple edit a tedious chore? i dont understand and pray there is a hidden option somewhere to turn it off. but even more irritating is the mousewheel behaviour. for instance, im listening, but want to move my screen back a little bit for something that i just heard. so i have the mousewheel set to scroll horizontally, but the moment i touch it, suddenly im back at the point from which i started playing, and now have no idea where that spot was i just wanted to examine. why the hell is it designed that way? not to mention that i have to hit that scroll lock key four times after i manually scroll to get the autoscroll going again. i cant think of a single advantage to that!! and then theres the zoom, which also uncannily acts exactly opposite from the way in which it would be useful. if i click off the scroll lock and can somehow manage to get back to where i wanted to be, using the mousewheel to zoom in for a closer look shoots my screen back to wherever the scrolling playcursor is. um, well if i have the option to turn the scrolling screen off, what good does that do me if its going to shoot off to wherever the poo it wants at the most inconvenient of times?!?! please samplitude gurus, help me make it stop!!! tell me samplitude really is the one!!!
  12. i think we are still misunderstanding eachother. ive been playing around with this for most of today and watching videos etc etc. but i still have no way of organizing my loops for later recall. i cant drag objects or ranges from the manager into the arrangement so i suppose thats not what the managers are for. this is what my problem is: im listening to a long recording of multitrack drums, 3 tracks. they are grouped together already since i recorded them simultaneously with different mikes. as i listen i cut out the poor sections and turn the good ones into loops. i need to put these loops somewhere for access when i go to arrange the song. a range is not useful because the sections will not remain in position. i know i can loop these now but i still have to return to wherever one instance is located and copy it over to wherever i want to reuse it. this is really impractical since i have to remember to set markers all the time to return to where i was working or else im quickly losing my place. if there was a list of groups like there is a list of objects and i could drag those groups by name from wherever they were organized, i could create a collection of loops that i could sort through and drag into the project when necessary. nothing described so far seems to allow me to do anything like this. i guess i can find a new way to work but i was really hoping i wouldnt have to disrupt 10 years of established workflow methods for the added flexibility of a new program.
  13. thanks for the efforts guys, but none of this is really helping me to do what im trying to do, which is a specific way of working. maybe its just not possible. its simple though, i just want to pull loops from improvised audio, organize them somewhere convenient for quick recall by name when creating a new loop-based arrangement, and have any changes i make to instances of those loops apply globally. and then i just need a way for these loops to span tracks, as in the case of a multi-mic drum recording. is any of this possible? am i even making any sense?
  14. im not sure what you mean by "comping". so dont know which video to look for. but what i mean about objects spanning tracks is that say a four mic drum recording can be considered a complete unit with one name. first i would cut pieces out of the jam and turn them into loops, or patterns. Each pattern would then be referenced by one name and always include all the associated files. this way i can see a list of patterns down in the browser and select them to arrange the song manually. but i should be able to select each pattern after ive arranged the song and have the option to either edit all copies of the pattern throughout the arrangement, or treat it as a new copy of the pattern. make sense? can i drag a group of objects spanning several tracks into the browser and have it treat the group as a single entity and all instances globally reflect any changes to the pattern?
  15. im sure theres a way, but as a temporary solution, you can just zoom in the wave by clicking the + sign around the border of the arranger window. i think its the one in the top right.
  16. hey there, im trying to get a workflow going that i have in my head but no program ive tried seems conducive to this yet... basically i want to record improv jams and then chop them up into arrangements later. for this to work the way im thinking i need to be able to easily take sections of material that may well span multiple tracks, like multitrack drum parts, and keep them organized somewhere by name. im coming from writing songs tracker style with individual patterns and then sequencing the patterns, but now i want to do it with live audio. how can i achieve this? im not totally clear on what "gluing" is for but that seems to be the way to keep the drum tracks together. so how can i put them somewhere with a name so i can treat them as a part i will reuse and perhaps modify throughout the song (modify collectively as well as individually). it just kills workflow for me to be searching through the song for a certain section so i can copy it and then having to manually change each instance of it if i want some basic beat to be a bit different throughout, say. id just like to have it all accessible from the manager somehow, each loop i make. kind of like in ableton how you can just drag a section to the browser and it saves a version there, except even there you cant seem to make loops that span tracks. can objects span tracks? what about loops? also, is there a shortcut key to locate an object in the vip from the object manager and vice versa? any help would be appreciated, thanks.
  17. yea but i bet it wasnt like that from the start was it?! cubase was a total nightmare before i learned it properly. and setting up all the ins and outs for each device couldnt have been more stupidly complicated. just one of the reasons i stopped using it...
  18. since installing the new mackie driver for firewire in the 1620 mixer i can only see 8 inputs in samplitude. there all there in other applications, just not samplitude, which is the one i need to record. there should be 18. im asking over there as well but i wondered if anybody else had this problem? i cant go back to the old driver either. long story.

  20. if your knobs are endless encoders (they turn infinitely in either direction) you need to select the "endless option." if the buttons are the kind you hit once to turn something on, then again to turn it off, you need to select the "state button" option. select these options before you press "learn." hope that works also, you might have to explore ways of changing the parameters associated with the control in question if thats possible on the controller itself. but certain controls, need endless encoders to controll them, like selecting tracks or something. but pans or eq gains will work with with standard +/- knobs. eq freq needs an encoder. on my remote sl, i have to set the encoders as "apot" for them to work.

Falcone- ok i still understand your point of view, but the main thing is samplitude has one of the most flexible interfaces for use of hardware controllers i've seen. but its not quite *there* and i can't understand why. for instance, why not just add another couple "slots" to control the low and high eq types? you can already control every other parameter from a controller and i don't see any reason why not this one too. i'm just saying, its aready almost perfect, why not make perfect? if you put a search function, as there is under key commands, in place for hardware controllers and allowed a user to potentially control any aspect of samplite from a controller, it would be so. what could this hurt? these are not new options, just extensions of existing ones. nothing changes here except the scope and the level of completeness. also, i've noticed one other major limitation, which seems unnecessary as far as this goes. remember i was asking about controlling the tempo or bpm from a controller? there's no tap tempo for my wireless transport and i can't seem to assign the jog wheel to adjust this either. basically i want to set the tempo from behind the drumset or at least adjust it so i can record to metronome. can't find any way to do this. but if there was a globally assignable tap tempo key outside the tap tempo dialog this *would* be possible. the only other possibility i found was to record a bit with some manual clicking and then set bar markers while listening back. that would set the correct tempo to whatever i was trying to record. but i can't do this either because the shortcut to set any of those type of markers will only set the first one, call up a dialog and then you have to set the rest with the mouse. i don't see any advantage in that, why has it been designed so. actually the apart from these points, the only thing i would like to see in samplitude's future is a more intutive way of quantizing beats. basically more like its done in live. being able to click on a transient manually and drag it where you would like it with realtime time stretching. not that the existing one is useless. its just a bit unwieldy, but at least it beats cubase, which can't even simultaneously quantize multitrack drums... though that could be fixed in v4 but i'm not paying to find out. ok i lied, one last point of contention is the zoom behavior. why can't i zoom to where the mouse is while a track is playing? it will only zoom to the cursor. or, i can get it to zoom to range edges but i can't define ranges without moving the play cursor. more gradual zoom behavior on the mousewheel would be nice too. geez i'm such a nitpick. can't you just give me a job? obviously i need an outlet for this sort of thing. once again thank you greatly for your help and your attention to my ideas. hopefully they are having some effect?
  22. how far have you got? its actually not too hard. only thing is if you just want to control just the active track you need to tick all the ...follows... options and set your track count to 1. thats in the hardware controller setup page in the options. first you need to add #empty and then start customizing.
  23. right click your desktop and go to settings. increase your screen resolution. at least that's what it sounds like the problem is...
  24. yea i for one would really like to see an option to automatically recall all dialogs for the active track. then you can just select the track from the track manager or mouse or however you like and the effects, and midi editors, eq etc you had been looking at are there again without having to close them all manually. just makes more sense. except i suppose if you want to look at editors from several tracks and compare them. but thats why its an option. and as a default behavior it seems like it would be far less frustrating at any rate.
