efx monitoring

i normally record vocals without efx but my friend needs to have the efx going in his headphones while tracking. i figured out to use asio (cant use wdm?) and use the software efx monitoring. i am also able to hear the efx. there is a slight latency but it wasnt bad at all for vocals. using an aardvark q10. so my question is since i record all of the other tracks dry using wdm drivers do I have to switch to asio for the whole song or can i switch back and forth between asio and wdm during the process? seems odd just to monitor with effx. is there a better way to do this??? thanks
